Mental Health as a Shared Responsibility: From Evidence to Collective Action

Presentation

Mental health is often approached primarily through the lens of individual clinical care. However, mental health and wellbeing are also shaped by families, communities, health systems, social conditions, humanitarian contexts, research partnerships and public policies.

This panel aims to explore how we can move beyond traditional models of service delivery towards approaches that are locally led, evidence-informed, equitable and sustainable.

Rather than presenting a series of individual projects, the panel will create a dialogue between different perspectives and experiences from Rwanda, Chile, Switzerland and international humanitarian and civil society organisations.

The discussion will explore how responsibility for mental health can be shared across different actors while maintaining clear roles, accountability and ownership.

Objectives

The panel aims to leave participants with a broader understanding of mental health as a shared responsibility, while recognising that shared responsibility requires:

  • meaningful community participation;
  • locally led approaches;
  • evidence adapted to context;
  • equitable partnerships;
  • sustainable systems;
  • clear roles and responsibilities; and
  • shared accountability.

The discussion should ultimately move from the question “Who provides mental health care?” towards the broader question:

“Who is responsible for creating the conditions in which individuals, communities and populations can achieve better mental health and wellbeing?”
